The 1950s

The Age of the Jets.

With the advent of the Gloster Meteor in 1945 and the de Havilland Vampire in 1947 aircraft manufacturers began to design new aircraft based around jet propulsion. The market literally exploded during the 50’s and 60’s with all sorts of innovations and developments resulting in an exponential rise in jet planes for domestic, commercial and military use. With the vast success of the Vampire the RAF and FAA were very keen for improved models as they were designed. The wait was short…

During the 1940’s development of another potential aircraft design gathered momentum, the Helicopter, but it was not until the 50’s that this form of aircraft came into its own with the British Forces…

Here are just some of the aircraft introduced to the RAF and FAA during the 50’s. Despite the many jets there are still several propeller-driven aircraft.
