Air warfare was not fully realised at the beginning of the war with many aircraft being used for reconnaisance only. Gradually, as the threat to both sides was realised, hostilities extended into the skies. Aircraft production and design increased at a rapid pace and many aircraft were produced by a multitude of manufacturers. The biplane formed the backbone for most air forces.
